In addition to the yoga classes we run in London (for people of all abilities and levels), we also run a cultural yoga tour. It is for people from around the globe who want to visit the captivating country of Ghana (a nation with a most deserved reputation for being the friendliest in Africa) and practise yoga in the heat.
Republic of Ghana
The Republic of Ghana (its official name) is in West Africa, it has a multi-ethnic population of 27 million and shares land borders with Ivory Coast, Togo and Burkina Faso. As it is close to the equator Ghana has a tropical climate so is always warm with 2 seasons, rainy (April-November) and harmattan/dry (December-March).
The Atlantic Ocean provides over 500km of captivating coastline dotted with many historical forts, castles of interest and beach resorts . As well as these beautiful beaches, Ghana also boasts virgin rainforests (to the south) and grassland savannahs (in the north). The country is divided into 10 regions with the capital city, Accra, in the Greater Accra Region.
The currency used in Ghana is the Ghana Cedi (GHS).
There are many Forex Bureaus in Accra where you can exchange your home currency for Cedis. ATMs are common in large towns and will accept most international visa cards so that you can withdraw the local currency (charges will apply and vary from bank to bank). Take care when using your cards, and contact your card issuer before you travel in case they put a block on your account.
It is advised to visit your health professional/a travel clinic (such as nomad) at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures. Country specific information and advice is published by the National Travel Health Network and Centre on the TravelHealthPro website. In summary the only immunisation you are required by Ghana to have is for Yellow Fever. All the others are optional, and at your discretion, so talk to your doctor or travel medicine clinician about it. The decision to take malaria medications is totally up to you. But there is no getting around the fact that malaria exists in Sub-Saharan Africa.
If there are specific items you will miss terribly when on tour it is a good idea to pack a healthy supply as all are not readily available in Ghana. A few things past tour group members have missed are; PG tips, rolling tobacco and filter tips, coffee, olive oil (as a salad dressing), cheddar cheese.
When packing be sure to include; hiking shoes/trainers, beachwear, some long sleeved tops/shawls (for evenings), trousers/leggings, raincoat and torch.
For yoga practise you will need plenty of soft stretchy/loose clothing and a towel. We provide yoga mats and props.
Sun protection is important (we don’t mean only lotions), hats and sunglasses will put you in good stead for a day out and about.
This being said, try to pack lightly as some are likely to over shop and may try to bring half of Ghana back home!
On this cultural yoga tour you will enjoy breathtaking beaches, stir it up in the cities and visit venturesome villages – all the while practising Khemetic and Afrikan Yoga, absorbing the history of Ghana and connecting with the community. Yoga4all tours are centred on yoga and exploration. The duration of a tour with Yoga4all is 10-14 days, this is dependent on flight schedules. Flight dates are confirmed 4 months prior to travel.
Yoga4all will offer 1-2 sessions of yoga and meditation a day starting from your 1st morning of arrival and lasting for the next 9 days. After these 10 days you can enjoy self practise/self directed trips, lie ins or whatever takes your fancy.
Our base, when not touring, is a private home in Accra. You will sleep in rooms for double/single occupancy (couples/friends sharing-as you prefer) and bathroom facilities are shared. There is electricity and running water. There are also 2 outdoor balconies, a kitchen and an area for sharing meals inside.
When touring you will stay in different forms of accommodation to widen your experiences. Some will be chalets on beaches others will be more eco in style and take you closer to nature. With the exception of a tree house in the rainforest (where bathroom facilities are close by and mosquito nets are provided) all will have en-suite bathrooms and fans.
